Indigo + Stitch:

Create Your Own

ONE-OF-A-KIND

DENIM JACKET

October 4–5, 2025 | Peterborough, NH | Empowered Threads Studio

Fall in New England. Crisp air. Fiery foliage.
You. Wrapped in community. Hands deep in indigo dye.
Laughter, conversation, and the rhythmic peace of hand stitching.

This is not just a workshop. It’s a weekend of beauty, creativity, and connection.

What we’ll do

Over two magical days, you’ll transform a denim jacket into a wearable work of art.

DAY ONE: Indigo Under the Autumn Sky

We’ll take our dye vats outside—under tents or in the open air—where the scent of autumn mixes with the deep, earthy smell of indigo. You’ll explore shibori, a traditional Japanese dye-resist technique that uses folding, stitching, binding, and clamping to create mesmerizing patterns in shades of deep blue and white.

You’ll experiment on small squares of high-quality organic cotton, trying out clay resist, layered over-dyeing, and multiple vat dips to see how the blues deepen.

Each participant will dye one large square of fabric. Once dried, we’ll cut these into smaller pieces to exchange with each other—so your final jacket will carry pieces dyed by every woman in the room. A collaborative patchwork of this moment in time.

DAY TWO: STITCH, PIECE and CREATE Your Jacket

We’ll move indoors (or stay outside if the day is gorgeous) to piece your dyed fabrics into a stunning back panel for your denim jacket.

You’ll learn introductory visible mending/hand stitching techniques, plus simple machine quilting to join your pieces. Then, we’ll attach your creation to your jacket—whether it’s one you bring from home or one you’ve made yourself in Adria’s Siena Maker’s Jacket class the week before.

why this weekend is special

There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when a small group of people comes together with a shared purpose. With just eight students and three teachers, this weekend will feel intimate, focused, and deeply personal—every voice heard, every hand supported. You don’t need any prior dyeing or stitching experience; we’ll meet you exactly where you are, guiding you through each step. Along the way, you’ll be part of a rare creative exchange, where every jacket carries not only your own vision but pieces made by everyone in the room—a wearable reminder of the connection and artistry shared here. Woven through it all are somatic practices and moments of reflection to help you trust your instincts and take bold creative risks. And with autumn in New England as our backdrop—crisp air, golden light, and fiery leaves—it’s the perfect season to gather, create, and express yourself fully.

Important Note:

Shibori is a traditional technique that is part of the rich textile history and culture of Japan.  While Denise, Adria, and Stasia share a deep love and respect for Japanese culture and tradition, we are not Japanese.  We strive to honor traditional techniques, while also feeling humbled by the depth and devotion that lives in the history and culture of traditional Japanese textile arts.
