How to Wear Jeans + a T-shirt and still look CUTE!

I'm a jeans and t-shirt gal. Always have been. Probably always will be. In the past, before I figured out this whole style 'thang, my jeans and t-shirt look was... simple. It was comfortable, but it sure wasn't cute.

Comfortable used to be my litmus. The ONLY factor I considered when getting dressed. Then I discovered Inside-Out Congruency, and realized I was selling myself short.

OF COURSE I WANT TO BE COMFORTABLE. I'm NOT a fan of pants that make my crotch hurt when I sit down, or shirts that I have to keep tugging on because the booby darts are fitting me in the wrong place.

So may I present to you my latest jeans and t-shirt combo, that is comfortable AND cute!

I'm wearing one of my FAV (comfy) t-shirts that I thrifted this summer.  It HAD a crewneck... until I ripped the neck out and made it a wee bit more edgy. Then I paired it with a (comfortable) fitted black blazer, sleeves rolled and collar popped, and slipped on my faaavorite no-muffin-top-here J.crew bootcut jeans.

I accessorized with a long necklace and a pair of my favorite Nickel & Suede earrings, but something was off. There was a lack of harmony between the tear drop shape of the earrings and the looooong necklace, so I swapped out the N&S earrings for these looooong Kerin Rose Galaxy Earrings and knew immediately I had a winner!  The long line of the necklace needed an accompanying long line.

But something was still off, so I studied my look in the mirror for a second and realized aha - the neckline on the tee was a little low and missed my high balance point (read HERE if you don't know what I'm talking about), so I layered on another necklace and voila... PERFECT!

I felt bold, confident, edgy and a little mysterious all day.  ;)  Oh, and comfortable.

Now do me a favor and scan over my outfit description above, noticing ONLY THE HIGHLIGHTED WORDS.

What do you see? When you get dressed in jeans and a tee, are you doing any of these quick 10 second steps? Could you imagine yourself doing them? What's holding you back? These are not rhetorical questions. Tell me in the comments.  xo

Style begins on the INSIDE, we all know that - but it's the little details of how we put things together on the outside that pull it all together.

(Yes, I froze my bippy off in the taking of this picture, but thankfully I spent most of my day INDOORS making play-doh snakes with ZZ so I was snug as a bug all day long.)

How To Turned 1 Summer Dress into 8 Fall Outfits.

The temperatures might be dropping but that does NOT mean it's time to put your summer dresses away for the season. Au contraire mon cheri! It just means it's time re-invent them! Today's post is going to be more pictorial than wordy, because the pictures speak for themselves.

I will say this though... the lighting stinks in my house, so the pictures are not A+ quality. That, and I'm using my iphone, duct taped to a tripod. I've been told my connect-ability and "popularity" will increase when my photo quality increases. But, that's just not happening, unless somebody gives me a new house on the correct side of the street with windows in just the right spot AND a volunteer steps forward to take my picture with their fancy camera.

Don't laugh. A girls gotta do what a girls gotta do!

1. Throw a cardi over your summer dress, and accessorize!

I have maybe 8 cardigans, a dozen scarves and stack of necklaces. If I mix and match, that's an opportunity for more than 80 different outfits right there! Get what I'm saying, here?

The key here is getting the RIGHT cardigan. I am a TRIANGLE, so I do best with a short cardi that hits me at or just below my natural waist line. I DON'T want the cardi to hit me on my hips (my widest part) because it will make my hips look W I D E... and it'll get hung up.

2. Layer a pullover sweater OVER your summer dress, and turn that baby into a skirt!

I like skirts, but I LOVE to wear dresses as skirts, because then they don't get all turned around. Again - with my TRIANGLE shape, skirts tend to ride up (bigger bottom / smaller waist) so this is a magic solution.

Same deal here with sweater length... too long and I'll look all crazy-like. These are JUST the right length for my body shape.

3. Throw a jacket on OVER your summer dress... and ACCESSORIZE!

IMG_7682This gives me a WORLD of possibilities. I have a handful of different jackets, bunches of scarves and LOTS of jewelry. I'll NEVER need to wear the same outfit twice!!

4. Put a button down shirt over your summer dress.

IMG_7684 (1)

I usually do a front knot, but this time I decided to do two little side knots. I've got a handful of button up shirts. MORE outfit potential!

5. Throw on a blazer!

IMG_7688This is my new FAVORITE blazer. It's fancy... like, Armani fancy. Guess how much I paid for it?

It fits like a dream, and it takes pretty much anything and makes it PROFESH.

So there you have it! I used 1 DRESS and created 8 OUTFITS.

But really, I could wear this dress 100 more times and NEVER wear the same exact outfit twice, if I mix and match sweaters, cardis, jackets, blazers and accessories.

Itty-bitty wardrobe. GIGANTIC OUTFIT POTENTIAL.

Keep out those summer dresses for a few more months and start layering!!

How to Choose a Power Outfit

I'm having a vulnerable moment. Right now. Right this minute. So I figured... I better start writing, because there's some real honesty flowing right now. On Wednesday morning, bright and early, I'm hopping in the car and driving south to Providence, RI to attend the Business Innovation Factory (BIF) Summit. I'm shitting pickles just thinking about it.

This is a 2 day, $2000 conference, filled with some of the smartest people IN THE WORLD. I'm talking MIT smart. I just checked the attendee list, and I had to stop reading after page 3 because I started to feel like a chump.

Here's why:

Deborah Schimberg, CEO, Glee Gum Gil Pepi, Chief Strategy Officer, Children's Hospital Colorado Jamie Casap, Chief Education Evangelist, Google, Inc. Stasia Savasuk, Personal Stylist/Founder of Stasia's Style School, Thrift Me Pretty Georgina Melone, VP of Imbedded Innovation, Hasbro Brian Goodman, Innovation Manager, City of Boston

Seriously. I could die.

They were giving away a few tickets if you submitted a pitch as to WHY you should be there, and I was selected.

Maybe because the gal that recommended I submit a pitch is friends with the founder... or maybe it was because my pitch was really good.

I don't want to think about which.

If I'm not careful, I could be that girl in the corner, pretending to be doing something really important on her phone, when in reality... I'm just suffering from a serious case of WTF-am-I-doing-here.

The only other conference I've been to as a Personal Stylist is ALT Summit. It's filled with creative types (bloggers, business coaches, other stylists, etc.) who love tulle, red lipstick, unicorns and confetti. Sure, I was nervous the first time I went in June 2014, feeling a little inferior because I had about 12 followers, a 1-day old DIY website, and a closet full of thrifted clothes. But I got over it REAL FAST, made some amazing connections, and had a total blast. In fact, I've been back twice since then.

This is NOT to say that the gals at ALT were not also MIT smart. They were brilliant, innovative, powerhouses of hustle, running BIG companies and making LOTS of money. Maybe it was the red lipstick that connected us. Or maybe it was just humanity.

But what about this time? Will I find my people at BIF? Will I fit in? What if they laugh at me... Personal Stylist. Bah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

See that... THAT'S BAD THINKING!!! I'm setting myself up to sit in the corner. I'm setting an expectation that they WON'T like me, that I'm not smart enough, not innovative enough, and that kind of do-you-think-I'm-cool energy is pitiful and not attractive.

So I'm going to head to my closet right now, and choose something that connects me to my BRAVERY, POWER AND CONFIDENCE, and I'm going to take you with me!

It's neat to watch somebody's process isn't it?

Anyway, I've come back to the table (where I'm writing this) in ONE of the outfits I've selected. It ended up being an iteration of what I thought it would be... and it took some work to get there.

You can see what I've selected in one of two ways... Here, you can look at the series of pictures below and SEE what I selected. (It's layering at it's finest, people!) 1 - no accessories and BORING 2 - great if it's really warm 3 - perfect if it's a little bit chilly 4 - love it if I'm freezing cold

OR, you can watch another (shorter) video and see how I decided on the jewelry and denim I selected for this outfit.

(NOTE - the process in real life was much faster, but I wanted you to SEE and HEAR why I chose what I chose.)

So there you have it.

In this moment, I'm feeling CONFIDENT about the conference. This may not be my typical venue, but think how fortunate I am, to be surrounded by such brilliant minds!

Hopefully, I'll come back with some amazing tools and maybe, just maybe, I'll become one of those fancy pants "founders" on that list someday.

Tell me... DO YOU HAVE A POWER OUTFIT THAT YOU PULL OUT WHEN YOU'RE FEELING WEEK AT THE KNEES? What's it look like!  Tell me all about it in the comments!!

And you know, if you're feeling a little bit not-cool-enough to join Stasia's Style School, which launches on Friday, then you might want to rethink that. You ARE cool enough!! Just like I'm cool enough to be at BIF Summit, among a crowd if brilliant and innovative PhD's. And I'm cool enough because I believe I'm cool enough. I believe I have something to bring to that conversation. So do you, girl. So do you.

With Confidence & Courage, xo Stasia

PS. TELL ME... are the videos helpful? Do you like them? LOVE them? Hate them?
