I haven't posted much lately because I've been knee deep in Stasia's Style School, but wanted to pop in real quick and talk DIY haircuts! I started cutting my hair full time 2 years ago, because the 6-week-salon-cycle was making me crazy.
Week 1 - hair a little too short Week 2 - better, but not perfect Week 3 - PERFECTION Week 4 - getting long Week 5 - ugh, too long Week 6 - my hair is DRIVNG ME CRAZY and I need a haircut today!
Short haired girls... you feel me here?
I started out trimming between cuts in an effort to minimize the I-feel-ugly-stage, but eventually took over the entire task because it was easy to maintain if I gave myself a 5 minute refresh every week or so.
I've given myself two substantial haircuts in the past few weeks, and lucky for you, I took video both times, so you could SEE how I actually do it!
Let's get down to it:
I would never DREAM of cutting my hair with scissors. That would take skill. And skill is something I DO NOT have. With a razor, I can hack the hell out of my hair in any willy-nilly fashion I please, and still manage to come out with a decent looking do.
Note - my hair is VERY THICK and VERY STRAIGHT. I remember back in the 1980's when I got my first perm. I swear there were at least 764 rollers in my hair. Anyway, I don't know if thick hair is a boon or bane for the DIY hair cut, but figure it's worth mentioning.
In the first video, which is just over 7 minutes long, I spend most of my time cutting the front and sides of my hair. I show you exactly how I cut my wings (aka - side flips) and do general touch-ups all around.

In the second video, I'm more focused on cutting (aka - hacking away at) the BACK of my hair. It's a little trickier, since I can't see what I'm doing, but I think it's important to see how little skill is actually required to give yourself a really good razor cut! This video is a bit longer... around 12 minutes. But, if you're serious about wanting to cut your hair - I recommend watching BOTH videos!

DISCLAIMER - These are not step-by-step, A-Z, how-to-cut-your-hair videos. They can't be, because the process is completely intuitive. I cut what needs cutting when I think it needs to be cut. Front - back - back - back - side - back - front - side - side - side - back - front - front - front. I'm all over the place, but that's what makes it work.
Couple things to remember...
- If you don't wear a cape of some sort, you might end up with some hair splinters in your bra, and they are dreadfully uncomfortable. In the second video I skipped the cape, and though I changed my shirt, I didn't change my bra, and had about 20 hair splinters jabbing me all day. To get them out, tap the sticky side of a piece of tape wherever you find a hair that needs to be removed and extract the bugger.
- If you don't like your cut, wear the brightest boldest lipstick you can find. Seriously - BOLD lipstick cures any bad haircut. People will think your hack-job was intentional and will marvel at your creative expression of bravery and character.
- If a full-blown haircut scares the pants of you, start with a between-haircuts trim. That's how I started.
So... are you going to try cutting your own hair??? Tell me all about it in the comments below!
PS. I have great admiration for hair stylists, and this is in NO WAY a bash on their profession. What I'm offering is a DIY alternative. xo
